Anne Vallayer-Coster was the second of four daughters born to her mother, a painter of miniatures; and her father, a goldsmith. Like other women artists of the time, she received training from her father, Joseph Vallayer. Vallayer-Coster was a leading painter of portraits, still lifes and flower pictures at the court of Marie Antoinette. Attractive, modest and personable, Anne was never in need of commissions or collectors, among whom were included the landscape painter Claude-Joseph Vernet.

Born in Paris in 1744, Anne Vallayer (later Vallayer-Coster, upon her marriage in 1781) was the daughter of a goldsmith employed by the royal Gobelins Manufactory who later opened a shop near the Louvre and Tuileries Palace.
